At Wind Fornells we guarantee you’ll learn whether you’re a complete beginner or want to sharpen your skills in dinghy or windsurf sailing

Here you’ll enjoy sailing from the word go.

Because in Fornells we have ideal conditions for learning A safe sheltered bay with no waves. And our enthusiastic and experienced team of instructors.

Why Fornells?

I suppose you've seen a beginner trying to windsurf: he hires a board on any old beach he happens to be on and rather than starting surfing, he starts suffering. Try as he might, he can't get the mast up and just as he does, along comes a little wave and over he goes - again and again. He gets tired, he gets fed up, he skins his arms and chest on the non- slip surface… by the end of his hour he never wants to look at a windsurf again. There are no waves in Fornells.

That is why the school was opened here in 1986 by an experienced professional surfer and sailor, who’d done quite a lot of sailing in a great many places both for personal pleasure and also competing in dinghy and windsurf regattas. So this is not just a school. It's a school in Fornells Bay, Minorca and has something every windsurfer or dinghy sailor wants: steady regular winds and no waves to stop you learning from the word go.

Fornells Bay is almost completely enclosed, the narrow entrance effectively keeping out the waves while letting in the wind. This provides one of our greatest safety features: even if a beginner finds it hard to turn round and make it back to the school landing, he’ll never be carried out to sea. This gives our students the confidence to learn fast. And you won't easily find that in most other places.(By the way, our monitors would never be so far away as to let complete beginner lose control in such a way.)

So, in Wind Fornells, you can learn techniques that in other conditions would be frustratingly difficult. And when you find yourself sailing in other waters, for example in the open water passages we organise for dinghy sailing, you have plenty of experience, full control of the boat and sufficient knowledge to sail in safety. For those who already sail, Fornells Bay offers carefree sailing and the chance to learn difficult manoeuvres and try out knew rigs and boats.

The idea was to start a practical school where people got onto the water from the word go. Practically everything’s done afloat.

We wanted courses structured so that people of all levels were guaranteed to make rapid progress in the skills and techniques they needed. But not an expensive school either. A course with us was to be perfectly compatible with enjoyable holidays in Minorca. Thinking over what our students have to say about us, I think Windsurf Fornells Windsurf and Sailing School has achieved all that.

Here are a few comments from a windsurfing forum on sailing and sailors at Fornells Bay:

“I especially recommend Fornells as a place to learn windsurfing and to develop new techniques... for beginners the water’s quite flat and it’s easy to stay up, and when the north wind comes in it’s a different league... In any event, it’s always a delight to sail in Minorca where the sea is transparent blue. There are also a couple of schools in the bay, one for foreign tourists only and the other open to all. At both you get good material, in good condition and suitable for all levels of experience.

A Bay-cum-port of splendid beauty. It’s superb location on the island makes it great for beginners and a fantastic place for people with more experience. We’ve seen Josep Pons and Joan Vivó grow in this bay. It is and always has been one of their favourite places.

… Regarding world famous figures I remind you of... TONI COLOMAR (CN Fornells) World Raceboard Chanpion, 2001, Sito Camps Raceboard Bronze 2001, Marc Riera Bronze in the Mistral European 2001 and Bronze in the Mistral World 2002 at Cadiz, as well as several Spanish Cups ….

One of the places where I have had the pleasure of sailing peacefully and enjoying windsurfing. It’s also worth mentioning how nice the people are. I went home with many happy memories.

I’ve been in some of the most radical spots on the planet, from Mauritius to Hookipa, watching people like Bjorn Dunckerbeck or Robby Naish making their boards talk with waves three times higher than their nasts.......BUT I’VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE WATCHING JOSEP PONS AND JOAN VIVÓ LIVE IN FORNELLS
